Sheppard uses color and texture to highlight the contrast between the warmth of Jamaica and the starkness of London, capturing the essence of Bob Marley’s journey. In this exclusive conversation, Anna shares how her team’s deep admiration for Marley shaped the film’s costumes of Bob Marley: One Love, the stories behind the designs, and the hope she has for audiences to leave the theater uplifted by a celebration of love, culture, and resilience.

Costumes are one of the most important parts of a show or performance. They help sell the time period the performance is taking place in, who the characters are, and gives them recognizable styles to associate with. Costumes can form the foundation of good storytelling and beautiful performances. It makes sense that costuming was very important to One Love, which is a story of cultural heritage, and music. It was great to hear how intentional the process was with learning about who Bob Marley was and how he expressed himself through his fashion. Making someone look like another person is already very difficult, yet making them in the likeness of a famous musician that many ppl are familiar with is all the more difficult. Finally, I think it’s interesting how they were able to alter the clothing to make the actor look more like Bob Marley. By using clever proportioning and different shoes, they were able to change the appearance of the actor. I think this a super interesting technique that can only be achieved through costuming.
