The Many Monsters of Ars Nova's "The Beastiary"

The Theatre Times: Created by On the Rocks Theatre Co. (the two person co-writer and designer team Christopher Ford and Dakota Rose) The Beastiary is a hypnotic feast for the senses, engorging its audiences in a strange world of color, spectacle, apocalypse, and destruction. Perhaps at times it left me somewhat overstuffed (read: out of my mind with sensory overstimulation), but despite the show’s own warnings about indulgence, I’d still eat this “medieval meets modern” masterpiece again and again.

Stylistically, I am OBSESSED with The Bestiary. I think you can really tell when a creative team has put in the time and worked to create a throughline throughout all design elements being used. It’s not an easy goal to reach—every designer comes away from the script with different ideas and conclusions, and everyone wants to make sure their interpretation reaches the stage—so being able to collaborate in a room of people who might have interpreted the source material in a completely different way can pose a challenge. Knowing this, it’s all the more impressive when a production like The Bestiary is able to connect the design elements so seamlessly. The high-contrast, high-saturation color palette is reflected in the lighting, set, costumes, and even puppetry. There are even similar textures and patterns repeated throughout the set, props, and costumes! Although the critic for The Theatre Times described the production as overstuffed and indulgent, at least it’s consistent!
