While this incident is certainly incredibly scary, I unfortunately find it unsurprising. As is mentioned in this article, incidents of antisemitism have always been happening and have only increased in recent years. However, that doesn’t make it any less disturbing when an incident does occur. From small towns like this one to even big cities like New York where there was a Nazi protest outside of the opening of Parade on Broadway, there are antisemites everywhere. What’s important is that when antisemitism rears its head, people stand up to fight against it. What we do in the theater is vital to keeping this fight going. We have a unique ability in the theater to both raise awareness for issues while also fostering dialogues that further the conversations around them. I’m hopeful that one day antisemitism will not be the problem that it always has been but until then we must be prepared for it.
