'Ripley' VFX Supervisor Urges Support for Union at Emmys
variety.com: “Ripley” VFX supervisor John Bowers urged the television community to support VFX unionization Sunday on stage at L.A.’s Peacock Theater, as he and his team accepted an Emmy for the Netflix miniseries.

I never even realized that VFX artists are still not unionized. It seems like nearly everyone who works in theater, film, and TV has a union but as I commented on after reading a recent article about production assistants not being unionized yet, there are still some groups of workers that have fallen through the cracks of an ever-developing industry. However, it seems like VFX artists are such a large, important group of people that it’s hard to believe they still don’t have a union. With all the recent talk of unions and strikes, it’s important to keep the conversation going. I’m impressed and glad to see that the VFX supervisor for Ripley was able to make this ask for support of unions on such a large stage with so many important people present. I hope that the unions continue to thrive and that VFX artists are able to have a strong union that offers them the same protections so many others in our industry have.
