129 artists and production workers have ratified a worker’s contract! This contract regards wage equality, retirement benefits, job security, etc. This is from The Animation Guild, IATSE Local 839, and workers at Powerhouse Animation Studios. This article describes an almost symbiotic relationship between the studio and the union, which is an astonishing but wonderful thing. This comes in the face of many questions on workers’ rights against AI and frankly, a narrow focus on capital. The Animation Guild certainly isn’t new, having represented animation artists, writers, and technicians since 1952 (animationguild.org). Like all other unions, they boast about the power of collective bargaining, the wage negotiations, and improvements in work conditions. Powerhouse Animation is a newer organization, having been started in 2001. In 2021, they signed a deal with Netflix to produce more animated shows. Particularly, Castlevania the series with Netflix has been very successful.
