“POTUS” at City Theatre

The Pittsburgh Tatler: The scene is the White House; the time, a generalized present day, although the political party in power is unnamed and irrelevant. This is not a play about D’s and R’s, but about the double standards and glass ceilings that elevate mediocre men above smart, efficient, and uber-capable women.

When I first read this review for POTUS, I was genuinely hooked by the comparison to the Stormrunner because my sister used to work at Hershey Park, and when I tell you, I literally blacked out on that ride. It was so intense I couldn't tell you what happened from when I left the station to when I got back. This comparison makes me very intrigued because if this show is anything like that ride, I would be scared but quite compelled to go check it out. I’ve seen posters hanging up in Purnell, so this review only adds reason. I really liked how in this article it went into depth about this all-women team in the White House, which hopefully we have a women president next, but I feel like all this chaotic drama created around the POTUS wouldn’t be there if we had a women as POTUS, that's all I'm saying.

POTUS sounds like a really thrilling show, and I am sure City Theatre will put on a great production. I was able to go visit this theatre last month, and I saw the beginnings of their set coming together. I learned a lot about the theatre while I was there and the types of pieces they do. They only put on new productions, shows that have only been around for 5 years or less. They often make original pieces, or bring in playwrights to produce their shows for the first time. They have produced over 40 Pittsburgh Premieres and have done a lot of innovative works. City Theatre is also a very community involved organization and they have made big strides to be inclusive and inviting to all, especially those who may typically be excluded. This show sounds very exciting, the company manager said to me, "If there is a show you come to see this year, come see POTUS." They also have student tickets for sale.

As a woman I think I’d find a lot of the characters’ experiences in POTUS very relatable. The description of the play alone resonated with me immediately, and I felt amusement, curiosity, and excitement as I began to read the article. The first thing that stood out to me was how the careful selection of the on-stage characters seemed to mirror that of SIX the Musical, where Henry VIII is the person connecting all six characters, but he never appears on stage. The president himself never appears in POTUS in a similar fashion, despite him being the figure tying all the characters together. I really like this approach because it takes the focus away from these mediocre men, even though their existence is crucial to the story. I also think that the plot is very clever, because there are unfortunately some women who work against their own interests, whether knowingly or unknowingly. It’s a grim and realistic portrayal that will stick with the audience long after the show ends.
