MUAHS Awards Unveils New Award Category For Theatrical Productions
SHOOTonline: The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (MUAHS) IATSE Local 706 will debut the highly anticipated new award category, Broadway International, to their awards ceremony on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, presented by Giovanni Eco Chic Beauty. The new category will expand the recognition of outstanding Make-Up and Hair Styling Artists to encompass all live theater productions, including Broadway International live productions.

I’m surprised that this wasn’t already a category at the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards; I feel like Broadway and International Live Theater Productions is a category that would “obviously” be included in these awards, especially seeing as film and other similar categories already exist. Regardless, it’s exciting to see that it is being added – hair and makeup is the technical area that I most likely know the least about in theater, and I do feel like a lot of the times it goes underappreciated. When I’ve worked on shows with really passionate hair and makeup designers, I’ve always been so impressed with their ability to express so much about a character or a time period through hair and makeup. I love that this is a new category in the awards, and I hope that it brings more recognition to hair and makeup designers and implementers from the theatrical world. I wonder if there’s any tension between the people in any of the categories, or if people are more likely to switch between certain categories, like makeup artists for film being more likely to switch to theater or something.
Its more than a little shocking to find out that Makeup and Hair Stylists don't already have an award for their work in live theatre? Given the insane amount of work and gorgeous results we see on stages across the world, for some reason I thought it was already a Tony category or something. Makeup artists absolutely deserve recognition for the work they do in theatre, and working in theatre is so distinct from working in other forms of media. From the difference of stage makeup so the audience can see it, to the sheer prevalence of wigs, to working with mics, to fixing things on the fly, there are so many unique challenges presented by theatre makeup that deserve to be recognized.
I’m glad this is happening, but it’s odd that it didn’t happen previously. Does this have anything to do with any of the recent strikes? Of course, it wouldn’t be directly tied to them, but perhaps inspired by the strikes? Regardless, the MUAHS Guild Awards are an interesting concept to me, as it’s seemingly inverted: I am used to seeing awards within a certain medium, like all film, all drama, all literature, etc. Here, it is a category -make-up artists and hair stylists- as the delineation within a variety of mediums. Frankly, I think it’s a great idea and can spark positive discourse and discussion in shared communities. I suppose the hope is that it leads to a greater appreciation for the artistry tied to the guild across these fields - and who knows? It may even inspire the next generation of make-up artists and hair stylists (and other artists) to pursue their future careers.
