The finer points of woodworkers are definitely a weak point for me, so it was fascinating to learn a little bit more about a more unknown joint. The graphic was especially helpful in helping me visualize how a dovetail joint works. After reading it, it reminds me of a wooden box that I have; you have to slide the top of the box sideways in order to open it. The mechanism for that doesn’t look exactly like a dovetail, but it does look similar and it works in the same way, so I wonder if it is just an aesthetically nicer version of a dovetail. It was also interesting to see that the amount of surface area for glue is a factor in joint design. That was something I had never thought about before, but it makes a lot of sense why that would be something to consider: if the glue can’t hold, the joint will fall apart.
