I think that it is really fantastic to see the more and more Carnegie Mellon alumni are making it really big in their respective fields. Specifically, the School of Drama never fails to amaze me. At the 76th Emmy Awards, which were on Sept. 7 and 8 at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California. The two alumni that took home awards were Alana Billingsley and John Zuiker. The both won an Emmy for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special for their work on this year’s Oscars. In addition to that, Tommy Oliver for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking for “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project and he was a graduate of Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. As a first year in the School of Drama, and specifically a Design/Production major, seeing other people from CMU winning awards really enforces that the sky is the limit.
“Ten alumni from the School of Drama and a professor in the Master of Entertainment Industry Management program racked up a total of 17 nominations this year.” This statistic is absolutely amazing. I am so thrilled to see alumni from a school I have so much pride for. I am so impressed by the number every year, but it never shocks me, I now really want to see the film that was mentioned in the article that Tommy Oliver won the award for. I got more interested in documentary filmmaking and the nitty-gritty of the festival circuit over the summer through my producing program, and knowing that our alum have done it is inspiring and encouraging. I would love to see more articles talking about the specific work done by the stage management and arts management student alums from CMU. I love seeing what people do with their degrees!
