Squonk Opera at 30

onStage Pittsburgh: “Unique” is one of those words that should be used sparingly, and only if you can back it up with facts. And the fact of that matter is, there’s nothing else in the world quite like Squonk Opera. If you have caught their latest show yet and you want some tangible proof, come out to see Hand to Hand at the foot of the Rachel Carson Bridge on Sept. 14. If you’re nearby, you can’t miss it.

I truly can’t believe that just until recently Squonk had a marketing person. Names matter and I don’t think this phenomenon could be called anything like Squonk. It’s artsy and homey and new and it has hands! Being a student here specifically is very easy to forget why we are getting this degree. We’re in production so much (just stating as a fact) that we are likely to miss all the fun things going on. But even if we do, it matters that we at least know it’s happening and it’s there for when we can assist, or to the very least the rest of the population. I also think that because CMU doesn’t do location-specific pieces (not that they have to) it’s nice getting to see what that looks like and that it does exist in Pittsburgh. I keep hammering in that fact because before coming here I never considered Pittsburgh to be an “art” city. So it’s cool to know that I was wrong.

Squonk seems like the perfect name for this company, and this company is just so in line with the weirdness of Pittsburgh. They just seem so unique in the work that they do. Though I’m not a fan of puppets and have had enough large puppet hands this year to last me quite a while, this is something that would be interesting to see and experience. I enjoy the fact that the audience is able to participate in moving the hands and get feel of what it might be like to work backstage. The fact that Squonk has been around for 30 years and didn’t have someone involved in marketing is impressive, especially with how much they seem to be taking their shows on the road. I hope I get to see and experience something by Squonk during my time here. I definitely think it would be a fun and very different experience.
