Optimism As Resistance: In Conversation with GCTC’s Sarah Kitz -

www.intermissionmagazine.ca: Nestled into the heart of Ottawa’s cozy, funky Hintonburg neighbourhood, the Great Canadian Theatre Company is one of the capital’s most foundational theatre spaces. GCTC performs innumerable, pivotal roles in the Ottawa theatre community: it incubates; it challenges; it nurtures. It brings in thought-provoking productions from across the country, and encourages works in progress from right in Ottawa.

I think it is wonderful that this community is attempting to bring people in their community together through the art of theatre. I like that they are also doing a diverse range of works from many different voices so that people of all walks of life will be heard in this art form. The capital city of a major country like Canada certainly has a very diverse community in and around it so they must have many different voices to choose from. It is always interesting to feel a responsibility to the art you are creating, but it is a noble cause. I would also be interested to know more about their “radical re-telling” of As You Like It because it is not my favorite Shakespeare play and I would like to see what they plan on doing with it, especially because they are keeping it such a secret.

I think Sarah Kitz is really cool for trying to build a season about destroying apathy and coming together and caring again. Right now, it's really easy to care about literally anything, everything, and nothing all at the same time and we always forget about what actually matters or what needs to matter right now. I don't know, maybe there's a reason why theatre is important like that, making us remember why we're all here and all of the sappy things I could say in the world. But you know what I mean. It's cool to care about things. And it's not cool to make anyone feel bad for wanting to hope for better. That's all we can ask for anything, is to hope for better and be the change you want to see in the world and, again, all of the sappiest shit I can say in a newspage comment. Yikes.
