Company Premiere of Dvořák’s ‘Rusalka’ Will Open Pittsburgh Opera’s 84th Season

onStage Pittsburgh: Beginning Saturday night, September 17, at the Benedum, and running the usual four performances, Pittsburgh Opera will provide the rare opportunity of hearing Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka – an enchanting opera not only new to the company’s roster, but to be sung in its original Czech language (with English supertitles).

I was hesitant to read this article, as I have really never had any exposure to opera, though I had seen Rusalka as part of my research on the Benedum Center for a different class and so I figured I see what it was all about. After reading this article, I’m considering going to see the show! I think it would be fascinating to see a show completely in a different language, especially one that I know not a single word of. I also think the original stories of modern versions are particularly intriguing. Seeing the original storyline and aspects of a tale that was created so long ago, when we are so familiar with modern versions, like The Little Mermaid, are so important to see. Reminding ourselves that the one narrative of what we saw first is not always the only one or correct one. This reminds me of the current conversation about the live action Little Mermaid movie that is coming out soon - although the story is the same in this instance, people are getting worked up about the fact that Ariel is played by a Black actor. Oftentimes, people get thrown off when even one aspect of a story they think they know super well. It’s good to challenge our perceptions and beliefs with alternate versions of familiar stories.
