I love seeing when Stage Managers win these kind of awards and love it even more when outside sources decide to interview them. Stage Management is one of the lesser talked about topics in theater and it is really lovely to see it being highlighted here. I also think that this interview was a little shocking to me seeing how deep the theater program is at this specific high school. When I was in High School, we didn’t have production meetings and we only ever had 1 ASM, and that was not always a guarantee. My high school was fairly small but I think that this is true of many people’s high school theatre experiences and that it is a little odd to have this great of a program while in high school. I love that this person plans to go to college for stage management and make it into her career. I also really enjoyed that she highlighted the soft skills that Stage Managers need to do their jobs efficiently.

As a stage manager from Arizona, Go Jamison! I love seeing the Arizona representation in theatre because Arizona isn’t really a place where the arts are encouraged. Most people from Arizona tend to just od theatre in high school but not pursue it post-graduation. Needless to say, she seems so very well spoken and passionate about what she does. I really like the advice and words of wisdom she gives to young theatre artists. It’s so important that we as technicians try acting at least once, and actors try tech at least once.
I also didn’t know about this “competitive” side to high school theatre. My high school never participated in International Thespian competitions, so it’s interesting to hear about an award for stage management, something that is so underrepresented and underappreciated in theatre. She seems like she really enjoys stage management and I hope she likes learning about it in college!
