Podcasts and Zooms and Plays, Oh My!
HowlRound Theatre Commons: The email subject line from September 2020 was “Creating Something Special” and I truly think it will one day be reprinted in a textbook. The email from New York–based playwright and producer SMJ was sent to eight of their frequent collaborators, myself included, who were based all over the country. The idea seemed (relatively) simple: Let’s stop wallowing in all the things the pandemic took from us and start making something.

When I was talking to other grad schools about their programs, someone from CalArts gave me a piece of free advice that I think rings true to this article and it's to look ahead to what theatre will be instead of what it used to be. In the article, they were talking about all of the elements of what makes theatre and how we can make anything into theatre if we have just enough ingenuity and it's right. I look forward to all of the different types of experiences that aim to connect audiences deeper without the need to be in close proximity, at least while the pandemic is still going on. Of course we'll want to go back to the standard proscenium, thrust, or in the round type of theatre, but while things aren't safe again, any kind of creative modality or different viewing style will be enough for now.
