Jennifer M. Holmes: Keeping Pace With a Changing Field

AMERICAN THEATRE: Not all paths through theatre education are made equal. Jennifer M. Holmes’s father grew up in Coventry, England, and served in World War II. After returning from service, he started taking elocution classes and happened to be spotted by acting scouts. After auditioning for and attending the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, he performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Old Vic before moving to the U.S. when Holmes was 12 and taking on Broadway.

I think one of the most interesting things to happen in Western theater in recent decades is the streamlining and standardization of training in the industry leading to what seems like a more concreted more regular field, however we are coming to learn that our industry will never become regular or standardize, it floats on the winds of changing times, never truly anchoring itself to any one thing. I hope that we all become more flexible in the future and learn to weave our previous training and the changing industry that we can see not as tumultuous but as opportunistic. A chance to seek a new path that may serve the longevity of theater. We will all have to change if we want to continue to have jobs in this industry, because even after all we have weathered, the theatrical world has a big storm coming in the near future and beyond.
