I feel like this article hit the nail on the head. It’s not enough just to hire BIPOC actors when your scene shops are full of just cis white people. The change I want to see in the entertainment industry isn’t keeping up with the social reform that’s happening right now across generations and I wish it was, but either we educate people and make them understand that giving people of color leadership roles is vital and could maybe make more jobs for folks in creative fields, or they could just hire us and give us a chance. But when they said that because of the pandemic no one wants to take a risk on hiring someone who isn’t white, as if that’s such a risky choice, was so spot on. If there’s anything I’ve found during the pandemic and watching what my parents watch, it’s that theatre really truly is everywhere. And people of color do indeed watch it and would pay money to watch it, you just have to put it up.
