VFX Artists React to Avengers: Endgame's Visual Effects

io9.gizmodo.com: Avengers: Endgame was notable for a lot of reasons. Not only was it the climax to ten years of film, but it was also a massive milestone in big-budget VFX work. The sheer scale and polish of these effects is extremely notable. Which makes it a lot of fun when some experts get into a room to talk about it.

Even if you don't enjoy the Marvel movies, and think they are bad taste, you can't disagree with how amazing the technology they use to create these million dollar movies is. I love how they talk and notice all the small little details in this video. With including Easter eggs by using previously generated and textured 3D models (from Guardians and the Galaxy using Howard the Duck) to just getting the stretchiness of the pores on faces to make a extraterrestrial made up creature such as Thanos seem to have more person like features, Avengers Endgame is a fantastic experimental movie innovating how movies can use technology to create even more human like creatures. Another great thing they discuss in the video is how they brought everything together in the final battle. Having so many different characters from so many backgrounds, in this massive battle scene and including a few long takes, Marvel has created something very exciting and engaging, making an audience very immersed in a battle that is all made from computers.

We are in the midst of an incredible theatrical development in history. VFX has seriously shaped our movie-watching experience. I’ve mentioned this before, but when you think of the fact that the first “big deal” movie to have VFX play a large role in its production was Avatar in 2009, you’ll realize just how far we’ve come in such a short period of time. That was only 11 years ago, and if you go and watch the movie now, the effects are so bad it feels unwatchable. When you think back to how exciting those crappy effects were back then, it seriously starts to paint a picture. I firmly believe that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has played a huge role in this crazy fast development, and it was really cool to see them sit down in that video and talk to a major player of that process. I’m interested to see what possible future innovations will make us look back at Avengers: Endgame and cringe at the awfulness.

Marvel movies have been such a big part of my life that it is almost impossible for me to find anything wrong with them, given my undying love for the comics and the movies. However, one thing that I do appreciate the movies for in a very objective way, is their incorporation and development of VFX effects, because honestly speaking, these effects really make the movie watching experience so much more worthwhile.
But what is something to especially point out is the development that these effects have had within the universe itself. Like the VFX effects in Endgame are so much more advanced than the The Avengers, even though both movies seem to incorporate the same effects, but that is clearly not the case.
I genuinely believe that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has for sure, contributed to the overall development of the VFX industry and its techniques, that they do deserve some recognition for that.
