PixMob Audience Animation At The Pepsi Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show

Live Design:
Bringing the crowd into the action, PixMob provided over 65,000 recycled wristbands to the audience at the Pepsi Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show, broadcast live on Fox from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL, on Sunday, February 2. PixMob LED wristbands could be seen in stadium seating sections, on casted fans on the field, and covering prop arches.

Wow! These wristbands are amazing. I can not imagine how much work it must have taken to create a system in which all of them could be controlled like that. PixMob specializes in two products, these wristbands and giant beach balls, which intend to involve the audience in concerts and events. I think that worked very much in the favor of this lighting designer. Possibly even more impressive is the light plots which are linked within this article. There are several plots detailing different areas of the stadium. Every inch of the space was optimized to create a truly beautiful half time show. I am sure that if I had seen it live, the wristbands and other lighting elements would have been incredibly magical, but having only seen the video feed, I am most curious about the media design of the show. I feel that we all have a decent understanding of professional concert and event lighting, but I wonder about media a lot. It is such a new medium that we do not know much about, and how it is used professionally is not often discussed.

This is such a cool idea. The fact that they even thought of LED wristbands instead of making the crowd turn on their flashlights is really smart. The best part of all of this is that that wristbands are recycled! The pictures they showed in this article were absolutely amazing. I think it’s so cool when people find ways to make lighting and media in a non-traditional way. The fact that they were able to create a beautiful moment with little LED lights and find a way to interact with the audience at the same time is really mind blowing. The lighting designer, Bob, really thought outside the box while considering all the risk and things that could go wrong at the superbowl.I have no idea how they made the bracelets or how they made them with recycled materials but I’m so happy that it happened because the show was beautiful and unique.

This idea and the effect they create is really something special. It brings a new dimension to audience participation in a performance. We normally think of audience participation as being more based in the acting than technical aspects or being a conduit for involvement rather than actual involvement, but this probably made the people watching this amazing performance feel like they were a part of the experience. I also think that this idea is a good way of bringing the atmosphere from the stage into the crowd without having to shine lights into the audience. Having the bands change color with the lighting is a great way of spreading the effect of the lighting design because in event design lighting is probably the most important in creating the desired atmosphere for the audience. It is also really effective in the photography of the event. I know it was probably a major hassle to collect and program and distribute all the bands but I think it was definitely worth it.
