The San Diego Union-Tribune: Theaters large and small from around San Diego County shared in the
honors Monday night as the 18th annual Craig Noel Awards celebrated the
best in local theater for 2019.

The awards — presented by the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle and named in honor of the Old Globe’s late founding director (a key force in San Diego theater) — were spread out among 10 companies.

I'm so excited to see so many more theatres around the country are putting on "Cambodian Rock Band". It must really be trending now because I saw it at Oregon Shakespeare Festival this summer, in Pittsburgh this fall, and have heard about productions in New Jersey and now San Francisco. It's quite a strong and heavy story, but I was excited to see it multiple times, as was Annika who came with me. Technically, both productions appeared fairly similar because the play has few, but very specific, scenic and costume requirements. One key difference though was that at OSF the audience was invited to dance onstage at the end, and many individuals chose to do so. It was also interesting to read about a production that is potentially headed to Broadway--"Almost Famous." I don't know much about the staged version, but thought the movie was cute. I'm not sure how exciting it would be onstage, though.

I really enjoyed reading about the Craig Noel Awards, which took place where I’m from! It’s fascinating to hear about the awards given to these different theatre companies that I’ve seen shows at. I’ve also seen some of these shows! I had seen Life After at The Old Globe and Cygnet Theatre’s production of both parts of Angels in America. I was happy to see Cygnet see some recognition as their production of Angels In America is some of (if not the) best theatre I’ve ever seen. It was truly a fantastic production. I also thought it was very exciting that the awards ceremony had changed to gender neutral performance awards. It’s a step in a good direction for awards ceremonies and it would be nice to see others follow suit. I wish I had seen more of the productions that ended up receiving recognition but I did find it engaging to read about theatre that is so close to home for me.
