MEIM Students Experience SXSW With a Little Help From Some Friends

www.cmu.edu/news: Twenty-five students in Carnegie Mellon University's Master of Entertainment Industry Management (MEIM) Program are taking part in South by Southwest Film, Interactive and Music Festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, March 7-17, to learn about career options from peers, MEIM alumni, faculty, staff and industry professionals. MEIM is a joint degree program through CMU's Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy and the College of Fine Arts.

Since coming to Carnegie Mellon, I have heard a lot about the Masters in Entertainment Management (or MIEM Program), and it is incredibly interesting to see the educational experiences and networking opportunities that it provides for the students that go through the program. From looking on the outside, it seems the program does a great job at putting the students in some of the right places (like SXSW) and then encouraging their students to take that next step and make that next question. Separate from the experience that the MEIM students had at SXSW, the quote from Vikram Ahuja that is mentioned in the article “Go ahead and write that letter to a CEO asking for 15 minutes of time. Focus your efforts on learning who the people are who will get you where you want to go. Don't network without a purpose.” really stands out to me and is very. Inspiring. I have recently found myself hesitating to make that first step in networking, but it is so crucial that not making that step is almost more damaging in some cases.

Hmm, I have never really thought about getting a master’s degree as the undergrad program is so good, but the Masters of Entertainment Industry Management seems like a strong supplemental degree to Stage/Production Management. It sounds like the MEIM covers a broader and more television and film area of study. I wonder what the intent of the degree is and where those who have completed the program move on to. I like the idea of becoming a filmmaker, though that is not my passion in life, but I’m curious what other doors a MEIM degree could open. On a different topic, my favorite quote from this article is “don’t network without a purpose”. I’ve never thought of networking like that. In life, I feel like we should go into everything with intention, so networking should be no different. Sometimes, I go into things and just go through the motions because its required, but I think what she’s saying is that we should always plan to be prepared and have a goal in mind.

Ever since the middle of first semester, I started contemplating what I wanted to do after my undergrad and if it had anything to do with live theatre. When my directing friend, Joshua, told me about the MEIM program he was planning on doing, I was like “Oh my god this is fucking perfect.” As someone who’s always wanted to work in music management and tv/film production, this segways perfectly from the SM/PM program in Purnell. Getting to go to places like SXSW and learn how to properly and confidently network is a very cool learning experience that I would love to take full advantage of. I follow the MEIM instagram and all of the students posts seem like so much fun, even though they’re working and doing stuff for class. Hopefully in a few years I’ll get to join the MEIM program, but until then I’ll be watching all the fun posts online!
