“The Roommate” at City Theatre

The Pittsburgh Tatler: The detailed open-plan kitchen that greets you as you take your seat at City Theatre’s production of The Roommate might signal to you that you are about to watch a play that mostly lives in the “real world.” Alternatively, it might make you suspect that what’s on offer is more like a television sitcom. As it turns out, both of these impressions are correct: The Roommate is a play that seeks to explore very real dilemmas, but does so with a plot that has about as much credibility as an episode of, say, The Big Bang Theory.

After viewing a production, I am often asked the inevitable “Did you like it?” I have a hard time answering this question because I cannot give a clear “yes” or “no”, so I usually say, “I liked aspects of it.” I appreciate how this theatre review gives credit to what was successful but is critical about what needed work. This past break I saw a community production of “Sweeney Todd” in which major elements were unsuccessful. Yet I couldn’t help but give respect to the parts that worked. The scenic design complemented the small space by filling it vertically without cluttering the acting area. But much of that acting area was filled with unmotivated blocking that weakened the storytelling. This critical viewpoint I have taken on is something I enjoy sharing, but also hearing from others. This theatre review is one I value because enough of the plot is summarized to intrigue me without giving away critical events and spoiling the ending.
