Sound Designer Kai Harada on the Audio Systems for The Bands Visit on Broadway

Stage Directions: Following the Tony Awards ceremonies in early June, the subtly engaging new musical, The Band’s Visit was recipient of an astonishing ten awards, along with a Tony Award for Best Sound Design in a Musical for Sound Designer Kai Harada. Once again Meyer Sound systems were a part of Harada's sound design. Meyer Sound products are used for this production as well as powering the music along the Great White Way, with numerous hit productions relying on LEO Family line arrays and UltraSeries loudspeakers.

It is not surprising that Harada used Meyer Systems for his system design. They have a reputation for producing quality sound systems in a number of venues, I think Heinz Hall here in Pittsburgh as well as the Chofsky uses their equipment. Marada cites that he chose Meyer loudspeakers because of the wide range of different sizes and shapes that are available. He also cites that the have great support making them an ideal vendor for live sound products. It further demonstrates show that in the industry it's important to think about both support and quality of the product being purchased for show. Its not at all surprising that the brand was used by productions including Kinky Boots, and the what seems like forever popular Wicked.

As a complete outsider to sound design, it is very intriguing to know about the work behind the amazing sound effect of The Band's Visit. Because it was a unique experience for me to watch this musical on Broadway. Unlike any typical Broadway show, TBV tells a simple but touching story with heart. Of course, the refreshing visual elements and excellent performance stunned me, but I was moved more by the auditory aspect. Combined with a beautiful orchestration and sound design, the perfectly-done score just went to a whole new level. I was fascinated by the fresh and clean feeling in the music, just like a jasmine wind. Moreover, I think the sound designer did a marvelous job to bring the instruments onstage and the band under the stage together, for I thought the music was so naturally from the onstage band and was surprised when I knew that there was another band underneath. In all, The Band's Visit deserves the Tonys in all ways.
