Working with X-Laser Products and Avolites Consoles

Jim On Light: I just saw a pretty cool series of videos on the X-Laser product line and the Avolites Titan interface that was worthy of showing — laser light has been something operated by laser operators for a long time, but as of recently, frankly, LDs are integrating their rig with coherent light. It’s not new, but a few companies have been making some very easy to interface products.

I love lasers, and I love that they are starting to integrate more into the realm of lighting design. What most interests me about lighting design is automated lighting, not only in a theatrical setting, but for large rigs and events as well. Concert lighting in particular uses a lot of lights as scenery-- that is to say, the design is more about seeing the beams than it is lighting what's on stage. In a way, those beam focused designs are using lights like large lasers. I would like to see the day that we integrate those array style lighting rigs and laser design. I would like to design a concert used an integrated laser and light array system. I am also intrigued by the magnet powered functions of a laser system. When I first learned the power of magnetic force, that it was magnitudes stronger than pretty much any other known force, my was blown. I truly believe that all simple machines will, someday, be powered by magnetic force.
