Thank You For Not Smoking

TheatreArtLife: Can roadies still smoke two joints in the morning?

Today, the production manager just came onto our bus before load in to tell the entire crew that smoking pot is not allowed on this tour during working hours. Yesterday, he came on to deliver some fine gifts of cheese and wine from the venue and the whole bus reeked of marijuana cigarettes….. reefers.

This is an interesting take on weed and marijuana. Coming for the perspective of someone the road for rock concerts I can see the concern. Everyone knows and has heavily associated rock performers with weed and especially so when on the bus. This then stemmed to become a stereotype for all artists. However, not everyone smokes and those who do, not everyone smokes weed – just cigarettes. Regardless, anyone who is working should be respectful enough to smoke away from those who don’t want to be around it and responsible enough to not do it during working hours. Cigarette users are very good about this kind of stuff only doing it with others who smoke, away from those who don’t, and do it off the clock. Why can’t those who smoke weed do the same? If you want to smoke just be responsible and respectful about it. Others don’t want to be around it for a variety of reasons and that shouldn’t be a cause for them to lose their job nor to have to deal with the people who want to smoke.

Hmm this article raised some very interesting points. For me, I am strongly against being on any substance during work hours. I believe that this impacts the work quality greatly and is not professional. While I understand that back in the day every one was drunk and high all the time. Things change however, safety is more of a priority. If a tech was high and something danguors was happening their motor skills will be impaired. Will this cause a huge accident? Probably not but still I am not a fan of this. Especially if you are operating machinery. However, if you are done working and all you are doing is riding the bus to the next stop and not working there than hell why not. Light up a nice fat joint. It can be hard to find downtime on tour so I am all about when theres no work to get #faded.

This is kind of a cool article to read about the touring lifestyle, but as with every article about drug use and other laws, there is some discrepancy over what issues are really issues. Chris really did his research on the legality of pot and crossing state legislatures is definitely a tricky thing to work around when on tour and doing drugs. I like that he holds firm to his opinions while also offering workarounds for everyone who may not have the same stance as him. He does a good job of laying down the position of others when faced with breaking the law by proxy and how they will not lie or take the hit just to save you. Ultimately, pot smoking is not to be done in a working environment and hot boxing the tour bus is not only rude but could be detrimental to someone else’s career.

Being high on the job should go without saying, its highly disgusting and easily an offense worth firing someone over. There is a stigma around rock stars and their overt drug use and it's a shame that its often times getting in the way of their normal working I think the main issue with this article has to do with where these people are smoking. They are going out of their way to smoke weed on a bus, causing the entire bus to develop this dank odor which is both disrespectful to the touring company and also to the bus driver on the bus. After reading this article, I don't understand why rock culture and their fascination with marijuana can't take a smoke break and take it outside for a hot second. In the future, these things need to be included within contracts, especially for the people on the tour that are more expandable, because they shouldn't be smoking anywhere near the tour.

This article was very interesting in how it addresses the idea of smoking on the touring world, “ Drugs and rock n’ roll do not hang out as often as they did in 1982. I prefer not to smoke only because I don’t function well around people when I get high. However, I really enjoy the company of people who are high, compared to drunk, when I am sober. However, I am much more tolerant to high people than some others.” Is how the author opens up his article where he continues to have honestly a reasonable opinion on the best way to smoke on tour if you must. My favorite part of this is that author basically boiled most of his opinion down to the idea of just don’t be a dick when you want to smoke, and don’t get ripped before work use common sense and don’t do anything that would be considered unprofessional with alcohol with weed.
