Dimmer Beach: In keeping with the new way of starting off a post with a definition, let’s start by defining a Mentor.
I turn to our friend Merriam-Webster: Mentor: Someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person.
We all start in this industry knowing nothing and (most of the time) nobody. How do we learn the things we need to know, and who teaches us?
We learn by doing, observing, and listening. We are taught by ourselves, by everyone around us, and by those that guide us.

When asked who my mentors are, I will unfailingly answer, “Rachel Hardin.” The woman who coached me in both acting and singing from the time I was twelve years old, Rachel did not only represent a teacher, but a best friend. Whenever I was going through a difficult period, Rachel helped me through. The knowledge she gathered over the years from her own hardships helped me immensely. She, thus, became a teacher not only artistically, but for life in general. Mentors are more than teachers of a craft: this article defines a mentor broadly, as an individual who gives help and advice to a less experienced person. Looking through this lens, I can easily name many more mentors of mine, my mother being one of them. She has given me more help, more advice than almost anyone.
