High End Systems Announces Hog Factor Competition
Stage Directions: The Hog Factor is a national collegiate lighting programming competition from High End Systems. Teams of lighting designers from recognized colleges are asked to create a performance lighting piece on either an existing Hog desk or via Hog 4 PC. The grand prize includes a Hog 4 console (MSRP $44,000), a $20,000 scholarship for their school and an internship at High End Systems, with the opportunity to join the company full time following a successful trial period.

While I think that they have the right idea in promoting the future generation of lighting programmers with this competition: “We are very excited to launch the first national lighting programming competition ever held; it's a solid investment in the future of this industry.” quoted the director of sales for High End Systems, why couldn’t someone other than Hog do it? I do not know what the Hog 4 console can do that its predecessors cannot, but maybe this one wont crash all the time, but hoping for that would be a stretch. I have worked with WholeHog III’s and a few RoadHogs, and all of them without fail have not only felt like an antiquated piece of technology sitting next to a GrandMA or Eos, but have without fail, crashed every time that I tried to do something complex on them. Their programming language is garbled and clunky and their networking and multi-programmer capabilities are wanting. Hopefully the next generation of lighting programmers is being inspired by a good product, and not a grasp at brand-renovation.
