Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Raises $700k+ at Flea Market
Stage Directions: The 2014 Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction raised a record $713,986 on Saturday. Thousands of fans perused more than 65 tables worth of Broadway memorabilia and bid on more than 247 Grand Auction items. The tables this year raised an impressive $369,616; the live auction raised $263,850. The top-selling lot of the live auction was a handwritten musical phrase of “Let It Go,” from the hit Disney animated movie Frozen. The phrase was written and signed by songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Idina Menzel, who sang the Oscar-winning song in the movie and voiced the lead character. The phrase sold for $9,000. An opportunity to meet Menzel backstage during the run of her current Broadway hit, If/Then, also was among the top live auction lots, bringing in $8,000.

There are many reasons why this article is a great sign for Broadway today. First, Broadway has began to adapt to where it needs to go. It has began to look more like Hollywood and the amount of fundraisers they do and how they do them. It is even better because it is a cause that many actors, producers, directors, designers, and more care about and is personal to them. The second reason that this is a great article is because of the sheer amount of money earned. It shows that Broadway can make an impact on important issues. The third thing is that there were so many people involved form so many different shows and areas, showing that people from all areas are willing to get involved.
THIS IS SOOOOOOO EXCITING!!! I love how the Broadway community is constantly raising money to help find a cure for AIDS! By doing this they are creating awareness for this disease while simultaneously publicizing their productions. This is a double win! This also creates such a fantastic opportunity for fans to purchase a piece of their favorite show while showing their support for the cause! I continue to applaud Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS for everything that they do, and continue to do! Congratulations on raising $700k, and I know more is to come in the future!
This is so great! My family's official Christmas soundtrack is the Broadway Cares Carols for a Cure Christmas albums (pretty much every one that has ever been released), so this organization has always meant a lot to me. I didn't know that they had such a great "flea market" (I've never heard of a flea market with $9,000 prices...) with such great memorabilia and other things to buy. Some of the stuff sounds really great too, especially the experiences like getting to meet stars and walk on roles (although I can only imagine what a headache that would be for management!). The props and handwritten lyrics also sound like such great memorabilia. It does sound like most of this stuff was very expensive, I hope that there were things that people with more reasonable price ranges could buy, so that they could contribute to the cause. I'm so happy that so many stars were willing to donate their time for such a good cause- it really says a lot about the broadway and theatre community.
