Jet VOLT Variable Speed Chain Hoists 1/4 - 10 HP
coptool.com: We were recently able to see firsthand the new Jet VOLT Variable Speed Chain Hoists and how the new controls operate. These units provide faster speeds when traveling long distances but offer much more control when precision is needed. Instead of users repetitively bump firing the hoists on and off for find adjustments the speed control is much easier on the unit extending the life of the hoist and rigging, not to mention much safer.

Although it looks like their target market is industrial and manufacturing plants that employ chain hoists to lift and move their products, these could have great use in the entertainment world, especially if there is a way to cue in their speed control, or play back differential speed curves live to move a piece of scenery along a more complex path than would be possible with either single speed or stepped multi-speed.
This is certainly an interesting article. I was thinking the same thing Chris said but I remember someone telling me using chain motors for moving truss or scenery is a thing of the past with new automation systems. I wonder if this is because chain motors never had variable speed in the past? Either way I would love to work with chain motors with variable speed. Like the article said no more bumping the what your lifting to get a precise position. In the lighting world that would be no more extra stress on the gear or shaking gobos out of place once they are focussed!
Variable Speed Chain Hoist?
I thought you could make one of these by clipping one chain host to another chain hoist.
But in all seriousness, this seems like a game changing innovation for entertainment, as long as we can get a grasp on the controls and make them easy enough to understand for stagehands who might already be set in their ways.
