Hear Ye, Hear Ye: Mayor Bloomberg’s “Maker Week” Proclamation

MAKE : Whereas: I was a ham radio operator when I was a kid. After I studied engineering, got fired from the only job I ever had, and acted on a crazy idea to start my own company, I found myself soldering capacitors in a garage and still working on our prototype model in the back seat of a cab on the way to our first demonstration. Planning, building, tinkering, ripping up the plans, starting from scratch and rebuilding—such a process can be frustrating, of course, but it can also be incredibly fulfilling and rewarding.

It's great to have the support of the city's mayor on such a noble cause - the preservation of our talents to make do with what we have, to invent the next problem-solving product, to make it big or small doing what we love. As an avid reader of Make Magazine, I am pleased to see that Mayor Bloomberg supports the movement, raising awareness of the fact that things can still be made in a society where almost everything is pre-manufactured for us nowadays.

I think it's fabulous that Mayor Bloomberg has come out in avid support for this event. Not only does it bring more attention to the city as a center for new technology and inventive solutions, but it also has a huge educational aspect that shouldn't be overlooked. If this event is given more media coverage and garners some attention among New Yorkers, more people will attend, and the younger generations can look around and see what's possible, and what they could accomplish (I know it sounds cheesy, but it's true).

I have always wanted to go to the Maker Fair in New York and to have the Mayor's support is such an excellent resource for the organization. Make Magazine is very absorbing, and their website is pretty fun as well. I love the fact that Make encourages; ingenuity, creativity, recycling, progress, and leadership. I think that doing projects yourself connects you to the objects around you and allows you to have exactly what you want by your own hands. Also when people are told to do new things they come up with some really innovative stuff. It is nice to hear about such humble beginnings from the Mayor and that he has so much support for Make.

When I was little I wanted to be an inventor. If I had known about this, I probably would have become one. This sounds like the coolest fair, and I can only imagine the amount of things that could be found there. I think it's fantastic that the city is so supportive of this and that people can actually be congratulated for making the crazy ideas that roll around in their heads at night. I know everything a person could think of must be at this fair, but I wonder what sorts of things actually end up there and If we could use them here.... field trip?
