'Mary Poppins' at the Benedum will be a homecoming for many
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Mary Poppins" touches down at the Benedum Center for a week as a special Broadway Across America presentation. The family show featuring an extraordinary nanny who prescribes a spoonful of sugar and a bucketful of magic for a beleaguered family has been seen by more than 10 million theatergoers.

I had to make an awful decision last week between seeing this performance of "Mary Poppins" at the Benedum and going to the "Schwartz on Schwartz" cabaret. I chose the latter, but I know that whichever I picked I would be really missing out. I have heard nothing but positive feedback fir this show, and it is wonderful to hear of the success of the show and the homecoming of so many theatre people. It makes me think ahead to my future and where I might be in ten years - maybe one day I will be one of the ones for whom the current Benedum show is a homecoming.
I think this production has both pros and cons. Pros: I think it is fantastic that Point Park students are involved in the show. It gives them experience with a professional touring production on a beautiful stage. Of course, they are spoiled to be working on the Benedum stage since it is one of the largest open theatre spaces in Pittsburgh. I've heard from the touring crew on "Jersey Boys" that the Benedum was by far the largest space they had to work in. Cons: Mary Poppins is a classic. The show has become the 30th longest running show in Broadway history, and it's been on many tours. I know it brings in the money because the story is so well known, BUT I think it would be nice to see something new at the Benedum. Original productions are the ones that provoke more discussion and surprise. I already know the story of Mary Poppins.
Ahhh I really love Marry Poppins. I was lucky enough to see the show on The West End a few years ago and it was incredible. I'm sure it wouldn't be quuuitee as magical as a touring production, but still incredible. I personally love the story and the music, and the intricate set just tops everything off! It's also cool to see some Pittsburgh natives returning home to the Benedum with this touring production.
I always loved watching Marry Poppins in movie and play. Just reading this article, this reminds me of the time I was sitting in a theater, totally surprised by the passions of the actors. Now, I can see that it is coming to Benedum, which sounds interesting. I am curious how differently Point Park students will present this play compared to the one show that I attended in LA. This show will be definitely homecoming for many fans of Mary Poppins. I hope this play has successful launch at the Benedum.
