Urbanscreen Invades America- Rice University Centennial Celebration

projectionfreak.com: Giant projection specialists Urbanscreen came to Rice University to produce the 100th Anniversary spectacle that would be splashed across 3 buildings on campus. From Mike Williams Media Relations , Rice University: Thorsten Bauer went straight for the heart, rather than the intellect, of Rice University. So when he saw the Spectacle writ large for the first time, even the German artist shed a tear.

It's neat to see a building projection installation where the imagery is surrounding the audience. So many times the projection is only in one direction - it may still be a good show, but it's still flat. The story behind how this feat was accomplished is interesting - I wonder how many technical hiccups they ran into by not using their own equipment and renting from LD Systems instead (they're a good company though, we dealt with them during a previous job), risking some elements not being displayed as planned. I really enjoyed the part starting at 16:11 in the video, must have taken a long time to render all of those particles.

This is amazing how great it looks with all of the mapping of the building and using it during the event to light just parts of it. Also just the sheer number of projectors that they had to use and get them to seem like it is a seamless screen. I wonder how they got all of the set up done without everyone knowing what was going on. Also I find it interesting that the measures that they had to take to cover up the fact that they were doing this event and also that an intern that worked at urbanscreen was a student and the fact that he kept it such a secret. I hope to see one of these events in my life,
