Pillow Project elects to repeat 'Twenty Eighty-Four'

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Where are we going? It's a question choreographer Pearlann Porter weaves from time to time into her work with her dance company The Pillow Project. "Everyone starts thinking about their place in things and their place in this whole system that we have going on, and what exactly that system is," she says.

The creators of 'Twenty Eighty-Four' seem to be doing great things the second time around with their production. I find it really interesting that the creators of this show are able to revive their production, and that they took a four year break for good and smart reasons in between the two productions. This past week in conservatory hour, Jed talked about how, when he directs, he always looks back at the end of a production and thinks about what he would do differently if he had the chance to do the same show again in the future. It is great that the creative team and the actors involved with 'Twenty Eighty-Four' have clearly thought long and hard about what they wanted to change, and even got to go to Paris along the way!

As the choreographer Pearlann Porter talks about her creation of the piece I find it extremely interesting that her piece about culture has so many different elements of our culture in it. I think this is exactly the way this performance should go. It allows a outside view of what our culture is which is, so people in the culture and people outside it too can understand it. I am also interesting in the changing style of Pearlann Porter. I wish I had the change to put both the 2008 and 2012 performance side by side and compare them, not only to see the change in style but also to look at the chance in culture.

It's always interesting to hear some speak about thier process. As a person in the artistic industry, I love having a barrage of ideas and points of view being flung at me everyday. As for Ms. Porter take on the world, I believe that her work will accurately push concepts relavtive to this world. She mentions that the world is pessimistic and that we have to be the change we wish to see. And I see this far to often in my own life. I would love to have the opporunity to go and see this production in its completeness. (3)

We've all heard and seen something on this subject before. Its an impossible topic to avoid today. I can say, however, that I have never seen a movement piece deal with it. What resonated most with me was saying that although we have all of these different modes of communication to keep us connected, in a way, it has separated us even more. We think that by sitting at home by ourselves talking to our "friend" on facebook we are socializing. Why not go out and get some coffee with that friend instead?
