Comedy about power and politics opens Pittsburgh Public Theater’s season
TribLIVE: When artistic director Ted Pappas chose the comedy “Born Yesterday” to open Pittsburgh Public Theater’s 2012-13 season, it was about timing.
“I wanted to launch our Made in America season with panaché,” says Pappas, who also is directing the comedy that begins performances Thursday at the O’Reilly Theater, Downtown.

Pittsburgh Public's season idea for Made in America is such a good idea. It's a tribute to America, and it provides an amazing opportunity to put on some of the most spectacular plays! Born Yesterday can still be applied to today, even though it was written in 1947. I haden't heard of the play before now, but the plot sounds really intriguing and I most definitely will go see it. The ideas of corrupt politicians resonate very heavily right now, with the presidential election coming up!
THis show could not be more perfectly placed. Putting it in conjunction with the election seems like a great idea. Plus it's not just a stupid comedy. It seems like a well though out play, and with its ties to the importance of intelligence it seems like it will make people think right now.Manny shows, though funny, are not always thoughtful, so its nice that a show has both. What I don't understand is how this ties into the idea of a cinderella allusion. In the article it mentions that it is much like cinderella, but cinderella is not a coming of age tale, it;s a love story. With the exception of the tat the article makes the play sound very intriguing.
Only heard of the play a few weeks ago but I am going to see it over break. The photos remind me of Noises Off, which initially drew me to it. That plus the fact that the story line just seems as thought it will be really funny and interesting. I hope that it is. I must say that the writer did hit one nail on the head which also made me further interested and that was the student discount prices which are always a welcomed sight during the "lingering economic woes" as mentioned in the article.
I find the play Born Yesterday an interesting selection. I know it was popular on Broadway a couple of years ago, but my lasting memory of this play is the 1993 film version with Melanie Griffith and John Goodman. I am sure that it is a terrible representation of the play, but for some reason I loved it as a kid. Probably because I had a huge crush on Melanie Griffith (I mean come on... remember the move Milk Money? Wow.)
This speaks to me about how good writing will always make a comeback. This play went from the stage to film, back to the stage, back to film and now it is back on the stage. I often get upset by the transition between the two mediums. But some writing can transcend the medium.
