PLASA Releases Portable Stage and Fall Arrest Draft Standards for Review
Stage Directions: The Technical Standards Program at PLASA has released two new draft standards for public review. BSR E1.21 - 201x, Entertainment Technology - Temporary Ground-Supported Structures Used to Cover the Stage Areas and Support Equipment in the Production of Outdoor Entertainment Events is being revised in the wake of recent tragedies to cover the design and use of all portable structures, not just roofs. BSR E1.39 - 201x, Entertainment Technology - Selection and Use of Personal Fall Arrest Systems on Portable Structures Used in the Entertainment Industry, is a new standard addressing minimum requirements for the selection and use of personal fall arrest systems on portable structures. Both are in review until Sept. 25.

I think it is great that PLASA is reacting quickly to the recent spate of high profile rigging collapses. It seems that in the wake of the last year's Indiana state fair stage collapse, outdoor rigging failures have gotten more attention. Although these are frequently attributed to "Acts of God," I am pleased that PLASA is stepping up the standards for outdoor events. It can only help maintain the industry's great track record for safety!
