Vectorworks Launches Cloud Services

Stage Directions: Vectorworks has launched a new feature: Vectorworks Cloud Services. The Services will be available only to members of the company’s Service Select software subscription program, and will let users of Vectorworks access and share files over the internet and make changes on a document from any location via the Vectorworks Nomad mobile application. And because mobile devices might not have the computing power necessary to make all the detailed calculations and changes, Vectorworks Cloud Services shifts the data processing to the “cloud” where Vectorworks servers will handle the massive amount of calculations necessary for sections, renderings and more.

I am intrigued to see how well the cloud services work with larger files. It was also interesting to see that the cloud is taking some of the processing off of the accessing parties computer. I wonder how much bandwidth is required to make this work correctly and how well it will allow people to integrate files and shows. It is very cool to see this feature on Vectorworks. I also wonder how many of the processes can be brought onto the cloud.

i think this is a great idea. i also think this is the direction that drafting or at least communicating through drawings is going to go. i could see a construction foreman or a lead carpenter having a tough book with all of the drawings at all times so that they could take any dimensions they were missing right off the model or they could update a master drawing/model in real time with any changes that have happened so that the drafters have the most up to date information. the only downsides is that you now need a good internet connection and you have to pay extra to have the most uptodate web enabled vectorworks addition
