Drama Desk Nominations Announced; Death Takes a Holiday and Follies Lead the Pack

Playbill.com: Tony winner Donna Murphy, who will be seen in the Public Theater's summer staging of Into the Woods, and "Smash" star Brian d'Arcy James announced the nominations for the 57th Annual Drama Desk Awards April 27 at Feinstein's at Loews Regency.

I read an article on Playbill that was linked to this one, informing me that the Drama Desk Awards had decided to do away with the Orchestrations category. No reason was given. I find this rather appalling, because even with the loss of the true Broadway orchestra, new arrangements are still being made and those people deserve recognition for their work. That being said, I'm happy to see which shows were recognized, especially that the excellent revival of Follies received 10 nominations. It's also nice to see that other than the elimination of the orchestrations category, the desk makes an effort to adapt their policies and categories each year to the season, for instance, by making eligible music and/or lyrics written for plays. While the "deskies" aren't the biggest show in town, they can often be a good predictor for which shows might go on to do well at the Tonys, or which off-broadway productions might make the transfer.
