100 Creatives: Jodi Bobrovsky

Art Attack: Jodi Bobrovsky is the properties manager at Stages Repertory Theatre and works with other local troupes as well. She is in charge of creating anything a production needs that isn't an outfit or a wall. In her case this has included suitcases, swords, books, wallets, keys, and an entire range of props based off Salvador Dali's work for Kira Oblensky's play Lobster Alice.

I feel like this job would be any sculptor's dream job- constant intricate challenge, stability/security, and fresh places from which to draw inspiration for the work. It is interesting how minimal her theater background is, and how successful she has managed to be. I feel like you would need at least some training in theater to inform your work creatively and functionally, to know how your prop would actually work during a production. Also interesting to me is how she herself is inspired by Marcel Duchamp. I would want to know to what extent her work is similar to readymades, whether or not she constructs everything from scratch or if she's more of a repurposer.

I love the way Bobrovsky explains her passion for working in theatre. I similarly love it for the history involved, how every production is different, and the feeling of everyone working together to a common goal. It must be so great to be able to apply her skills to something as ever-changing as theatre, as the jobs are never the same and the day is never boring. What a dream for an artist! I think it is so great that although she is not much of a "theater geek", her passions still lie in the work that she does and are focused at the tasks at hand.
