Howard Werner’s Media Design For Spider-Man

Live Design: Howard Werner, media designer for Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, has been with the production nearly since its inception more than three years ago. “There was a desire from the beginning to have media as a part of the overall design, and there was always a design element, especially in the second act, that included moving panels of video surface,” says Werner of the initial designs, referred to by many on the creative team as “version 1.”

I attended the BPMC (Broadway Master Class) in May where Howard and his team spoke to a lot fo this process. One of the most interesting things I gleaned from this experience is how his role changed from the initial work on the production. Julie had another designer who hadn't really done theatre do the content and Howard would do the technology work. As version 2 rolled around Howard's team had a larger role in the process to a point where I feel he should be credited as the designer by now.

It is funny in the original conception of the show they did not want it to seem like a rock and roll show. They said that the finale product did end up being just that. I feel that they did not realize what they were making with the large LED panels and all of the moving lights that they have in the show and the flying that is in the show. It makes a lot of sense that in the V.2 they use media a lot more to change the show to make and install the scenery which is expansive and time consuming. When they were redoing the show they did not have all that much money. I wonder if they were to go back with their current team, if the show would have been done in a different way.
