Spotlight - White Plains - Building a Love for Live Theater

NYTimes.com: "MOMENTS before a recent performance of “Camelot” at the White Plains Performing Arts Center, Jack W. Batman, the executive producer, walked onto the stage. Speaking amiably, he thanked people for coming and asked for their support. It was a folksy, decidedly un-Broadway beginning to the professional production that followed, but it reflected the way the nonprofit center has built its audience since Mr. Batman’s arrival 18 months ago. Subscriptions are up, single ticket sales are up, and according to Bruce Robert Harris, the center’s associate producer, Broadway actors and directors are clamoring to work here."

It is encouraging to note that theater is still plugging along in the current economic crisis. I think that, as such an integral part of our society, live theater should not fall through the cracks as people try to find money where there really isn't any. I really liked the articles comment that "we can't live on just movies".

The center seems to be doing really well financially, but also artisticly as well. One of the most important items to consider when building an audience base is to create excellent theater and to involve the audience in the art in a individualized and personal manner so they feel that they have something invested in what goes on on stage.
