High hopes for arts-friendly president
SFGate: "It was 'a historic election for the arts,' said Robert Lynch, president and CEO of the Washington, D.C., advocacy group Americans for the Arts. In President-elect Barack Obama, the country has 'a visionary arts leader' with a substantive platform in support of the arts."

"The American public is willing to pay more in taxes when they know the money is going directly to the arts,"
Really? I would need a more convincing argument to really believe that. The article said that Minnesota was able to do that with passing a bill that included land conservancy, which makes sense. Still, it doesn't sound like your raising taxes, your just rerouting them towards the arts. I don't think a lot of people would be willing pay more in taxes towards anything given economic state.
I would agree that it will be nice to have a arts friendly president in the white house, though he will need to work some magic to get more funding into arts programs. The current economic state of this country couppled with the laundry list of other problems means that arts is the last thing on the public's mind. As artists of course we are pro arts, and i believe that our day will come. Though I believe that it will most likely come as effects of other initiatives to clear up the current state of crisis.
Though I feel like Obama will focus a lot of his presidency making changes in his country I feel like the arts is one of the lasts ones. While many presidents make statements to get elected they have to focus their attention on major concerns of the country. I feel like we might already be putting Obama on a high pedestal to accomplish all these things.
I think that having a president who is involved in the arts is exciting and well overdue. Hopefully art programs will be introduced back into public schools with Obama supporting that.
I do understand that we can't expect too much too soon, but I feel that we're on the right path.
I'm really hopeful for the new presidency. It is nice to have a president who is strong in the arts. We have not really been given much funding in the recent past. however, along with federal funding comes the question of censorship. i wonder how much will be censored for the federally funded arts.
This article just goes to show how nearly every demographic is trying to claim Obama as their president. I think it would be great to get some more support for the arts in our country, but its selfish of the arts community to expect some kind of drastic change when the country is in such flux.
A huge step for progress for us. I'm curious how many jobs they are expecting to arise now with the boost. I agree with serrano in that while it's nice for people to know that there money is going to the arts, there are other more pressing things like, road upkeep, utilities in some states, etc. that mean something a little more. Icing on the cake.
