Broadway's Great White Way goes green

Reuters: "Broadway's 'Great White Way,' nicknamed for the many marquee and billboard lights that flood the theater district with light, will soon be the 'Great Green Way,' New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater to launch the initiative."

Finally, Christ. New York needs to jump on that already.

I look forward to seeing how the mentioned elements will affect the "green" footprint of the Broadway stage and how regional theatres around the country can also help in the green movement. What will prove more difficult is how theatrical lighting will most likely be attacked more and more as time goes on.

Changing all of those light bulbs must have taken a lot of labor...

It is good to know that Broadway is making an effort. Hopefully this will set an example for theaters across the country and the world. I know we are all working toward it, but sometimes we need and example to follow because something like this is easier said than done.

It would be interesting to know how much money and energy all of this will really save. Maybe there will be a study of some kind in 5 years.
