Big Balls: NYC's Permanent New Year's Eve Ball Is the Largest Ever
Gizmodo: "At first glance, the new ball set to drop over Time's Square this New Year's Eve looks a lot like designs from years past. However, the updated ball is twice as big as previous versions (12-feet tall, 11,875 pounds) and it will be the first to be a permanent year-round fixture atop One Times Square."

This ball is ridiculously cool. I am a bit unsure why it needed to be twice as big as years past but hopefully, it won't break and will be permanent. Though I somewhat forsee them decided it is enough of this ball in the year 2013 or soemthing and getting a new one.

Really? NYC can't find better things to spend that kind of money on? Can't it just be some generic crystal?
That's really cool. The new design is much better than the on last year. Just adding more size to the ball really makes it look more visually appealing. I'm also glad it's finally staying up all year, making the fact that it falls even more symbolic.
Wrong place to spend money right now... Don't you think?

What kind of maintenance will it need and how much will that cost?
I don't think this is a wise appropriation of funds at the moment? Doesn't NY have better things to spend their money on... or is this a federal cost because it is one of the largest and is the most publicized New Year's event in the country?
i disagree with the first comment. this ball is not ridiculously cool. it's just ridiculous. since when did it become ok for us to so much time and money focusing on a ball? a big light up ball? that drops. a dropping ball. there is no way to justify this. i do understand the tradition and the spectacle, but couldn't we just stick with the old one? isn't it more about the novelty than the actual ball anyway?
it seems to me this time and money could have been put to more than just... a ball.
