Musical Walmartopia Officially Opens in NYC Sept. 3

Playbill News: "Walmartopia is an 'irreverent agitprop satire of big business (and, in particular, that corporate giant associated with the eternal smiley face),' according to the producers."

This seems like an interesting musical. It is funny what we perceive the world to be like in the future. Starbucks, Wal-mart, Ikea, McDonalds, and etc. You name it. These enormous corporations seem like they are in fact taking over the universe and it seems like an interesting show to watch...

It’s impressive that the produces of Walmartopia have had no legal interaction with Wal-mart Inc. Though the show has the disclaimer of having no relation to the real company there are many direct references (the trademarked smiley face for example). What is more amazing is that the family of Sam Walton has not done anything about this show, being that Sam Walton is actually one of the characters in the Musical. I wonder how much press Walmartopia will have to receive before this becomes a court issue.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, no legal action has been made, nor does it look like there will be for some strange reason. One of Wal-Marts spokesman said he doesn't even plan on reading the script or seeing the show. I found this quote quite humorous.

"It's a futuristic musical that 's not based on fact, just like there 's no Phantom of the Opera. "

I don't know how anyone could watch Walmartopia and not see some sort of underlying statement and factual evidence. We'll see once it makes it's debut

It's interesting to see how to grab people's attention we creat musical entertainment to lure them in. The musical goes into the details of how WalMart treats their employees and such. And yet I seem to remember watching a show on the Discovery Channel about 5 years ago about all of this.

well unless this musical envolves a yellow happy face floating around slashing prices, this wreaks of lawsuit. i mean, the assumed villian-corporation of the play is in no way ambiguous, and the play notes seem not too supportive of the capitalist giant. however if it has made it this far it must have a good foundation and support backing it. it will be interesting to see how long it lasts and what the reviews are.

This honestly seems to be the craziest idea for a musical I have heard in a while. If you want to do a satire on big business screwing the little guy go see Urinetown. This seems to me to be a direct hit at the Walmart corporation, and though perhaps they deserve it, I see this as a lawsuit waiting to happen.
