Disney is becoming a little bit too obsessed with producing its films into Broadway productions. DOn't get me wrong, there are a lot of Disney films that would make great broadway shows, but if they continue, pretty soon we will only see Disney on Broadway. It also seems like they are trying to make too many movies into musicals.
I agree with the articles statement that Disney 'roughly has their reputation on the line' in producing The Little Mermaid. As disney musical # 5, i get the feeling that if this one works, we will be seeing more and more of these for several years, as they have a tried and true system. Pocahantus anyone? But if this one fails, i would be willing to bet it is the last one.
I think that it was wise for Disney to show Little Mermaid in Denver outside before heading to Broadway. As with the Tarzan disater there is no way to know what to improve in a show if there is no feedback. Yes, they are correct in thinking that the fan basis for Mermaid is deeper then for Tarzan, but in the end if the show is bad then nothing can save it. The fan basis will help it for only a matter of time before it comes to end.
I agree with Brian. Not every Disney movie has the makings of a great Broadway show, and out of all of them, Little Mermaid seems like a huge stretch. The bad reviews are par for the course when reimagining a childhood classic.
