Randy Pausch And "The Last Lecture"

Couric & Co.: "The story is about a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. His name is Randy Pausch and he's one of the foremost authorities on virtual reality. Not long ago he was asked to give a 'last lecture.' 'Last lectures' have become popular on college campuses. It's where the professor speaks as if he's dying and has one last chance to convey all his most important wisdom to his students. It was a painfully simple assignment for Randy."

This idea to meet with Pausch weekly should be interesting. I can't decide if this is good or bad. I feel that Pausch has a LOT to offer, but this almost puts him in an even brighter spotlight through a really hard time for him AND his family. I could see this information logged and then compiled into a biography.

It was very inspiring to see clips of his lectures. He seemed he still had so much to offer to his colleagues, students and the industry. It is always enlightening to see people with cancer who strive to overcome their sickness. I hope his knowledge and insights are fully delivered as the time allows him.

too bad i had crew that night...

weekly meetings with a reporter from cbs? i can't say i like the idea much. the media just wants sensational stories to tell, and if this guy can do one every week, he's obviously aiming for a promotion. sorry to be so skeptical around this topic, but the media as a whole is out to make money...

If you wanted to go, I have to ask, did you pursue avenues to getting the night off? All production crews are very fluid right now, short of a tech rehearsal or performance i cannot foresee a situation where a student would not be allowed to reschedule.

Please, please, please stop using this as an excuse.

I watched the lecture online after the fact and it was one of the most inspiring things I've seen in a long time. Just his overall attitude with all of this and the way he was talking really made a huge impression. I found it very impressive that my friend who goes to Arizona State messaged me and asked me if I had seen it because every professor at her school was talking about it.

Besides, the lecture was at 4:30 in the afternoon, not during crew. Which all sophs knew, because Indira Nair told the Oswald class personally. Seriously, be more inventive with your crew complaints, please.

Some lessons from Randy Pausch’s last lecture that especially moved me:

1. Brick walls are there for a reason: they let us prove how badly we want things.
2. Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.
3. Never lose the child-like wonder.
4. If we do something which is pioneering, we will get arrows in the back. But at the end of the day, a whole lot of people will have a whole lot of fun.
5. Be good at something; it makes you valuable.
6. If you live your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself, and the dreams will come to you.
