It's good that they've offically approved cat 5; its a lot cheaper than the special 120ohm cable needed for rs-485. They seem pretty adamant about using only xlr-5's, probably as a result of all the manufacturers using xlr-3's. I'm a big fan of using rj-45 connectors. It's like 5 cents compared to around ten dollars a connector. The strength/durability issue is present, but a properly crimped connector is not going to fail unless it is crushed or the tab is broken off. The neutrik rj-45 connectors are cool, but the money savings is then lost.
All I can really say is finally. DMX was a great thing when it came out, giving a vast amount of bandwidth over AMX. Downfall? No standards. 3-pin or 5-pin? I'm excited to read what all the new standard says. Jason said that you can use cat 5 and that alone makes me happy. But really, why do they still insist in keeping the 2 cables that do nothing?
