This sounds like a wonderful tradition. It is always nice to see people being recognized for their effort, no matter how large or small. This seems like a very unique way to publicly support the hard work of someone who might not be commended for it all that often. I also think traditions are simply fun in general. Being awarded that robe would certainly be an experience one isn't likely to forget.
