Recovering the Lost Art of Note-Taking

lifehack.org: "Note-taking is important for both academic and professional life. Without the skill of note-taking, you may capture less information in a meeting, or you may not recall an important theory that your professor mentioned in a lecture."

This is interesting because I take all my class notes in a sketchbook and sorta do it in a journal format that is suggested here. This way of taking notes was suggested to me last semester and the tips here seem really useful. The ones which I have already put into effect are the journal format and the use of symbols helps...I'll try other things suggested for note taking and I think this site is really useful because its true that so many people don't know how to take notes.

I know that some people prefer to use their computers when it comes to taking notes. For me, I am faster with pen and paper. I also alternate colors for different ideas in my notes. I found that when I go back over my notes, I can remember them easier because I am associating a color with that idea. And because my handwriting varies more than typed writing, I can "see" my notes. Thank god for a photographic memory.

Note taking is something I try to do really well in each class - although I know I could take much better notes. As was said on the site taking notes truly help as far as paying attention, staying awake, and just overall appreciation for what is being said. I definitely need to make noes more concise and find time to review them. As Candace said - color coding helps immensely, I look back at my notes and days I take the time to color code - are the easiest to review and understand, whereas the ones in just black pen, I'm more likely to just scan, or not be able to find what is actually important on the page. Hopefully this semester I can apply some of the note taking techniques on this site.

If you look to the people who are not taking notes in class the engagment is a big thing and you'll find they are most likely to not be paying attention or drifting. I personally keep pages dated amongst hand outs to keep all my days in order. I don't like the journal because it doesnt allow to add and rip out.

That is so true. I would never remember what the teacher had taught if I typed my notes. When I write my notes I rarely have to look back over them since I also have the memory of writing them down.

Am I the only person in the world who loves to type their notes? Personally, I can't stand handwritten notes. Either I can't write quickly enough or my handwriting is so sloppy I can't read it. Maybe it's a product of our technological age, but I type much faster than I write. And in regards to the effectiveness of note-taking, I remember things more clearly when they are in typed outline form. It's neater that way. My hardest classes are those in which I can't use my computer.
