For School of Drama, mask-making takes on new meaning and urgency

YaleNews: Yale’s theater stages have gone dark for now, but members of the School of Drama’s costume and scene shops are still hard at work: They’re putting their talents to use by making masks and face shields for local health facilities to address the critical shortage of these items during the COVID-19 epidemic.

It is so inspiring to me that so many costume and scene shops across the country are using their amazing production skills to fabricate masks and other personal protective equipment for medical personnel. The Yale costume shop is one of many shops whose staff have turned to making fabric masks to donate. I am so inspired by their willingness to do anything they can to help others. I have heard that a friend of my aunt works in a shop that makes curtains and blinds. She is having her stitchers make masks to tell so that they can still get paid. If there is one thing for sure it is that this tough time is definitely bringing out the best and most creative sides of people. I have been making masks for my family members and I’ve found that it’s actually very calming and gives me a feeling of purpose.

Costumers have really shown up to party in the relief efforts during this pandemic. It is moving to see how much they have used their skills to help. Who knew the world would ever run out of factory-made masks and suddenly need thousands of sewing-machine-fluent members of society to supplement that entire production line. I love seeing all the fun patterns and mask shapes that they have been creating over the last month. With as grim as this situation is, especially for the medical professions receiving these masks, I would like to imagine that these bright and colorful little pieces of PPE add some kind of hope or happiness to their days. I admire how dedicated these theatre artists are to helping this cause in addition to all of the educating work they already do. It truly displays their character, and I hope their students take the time to acknowledge that.
