The BGA College Green Captain program is modeled on the successful BGA Broadway Green Captain program, in which a cast or crew member of every Broadway production volunteers to serve as a BGA liaison member of the production for all things green or environmentally friendlier.

I think the BGA College Green Captain Award is a step in a very positive direction for college theatre. Often in educational theatre, there is a sense of build and destroy. This idea is not as true as it used to be but it is important for schools to be ecologically responsible considering the amount of materials that are typically used for such a short period of time. It is also great that the award is modeled after the same type of award but for professional theatre. It is great to see more and more educational practices being modeled after things that are actually happening in the "real world". I also like this article because it mentions how to reduce the footprint for theaters at the end.
This is a wonderful idea! I often find myself pretty disgusted with how much paper gets thrown out of our building on a daily basis, from reprinting paperwork for a bunch of people because there's a tiny mistake on it to throwing away the rest of a C-sheet of paper because all you needed was to print a header for something. I think that having the presence of an authority who can act as the go-to people for environmentally friendlier practices that has both a student and a faculty member on board can significantly help everyone, no matter who they are, make more environmentally conscious decisions. I also think that there is definitely room in the way we tend to handle striking building materials after shows. Maybe another department in the university can use what we're about to throw away? Is there a better way to store the stock materials we already have in order to make space for more? Could there be more of a push for teachers to use Blackboard as a way to get materials and information to students without needing to print things out?
This is a really awesome idea for college theatre. I think it will really help reduce all the pointless waste that the theatre is guilty of. I especially liked how they gave ideas to make your theatre greener at the end so every theatre can start right away. Having an outside source come and evaluate the theatre in a nice way; if you do well you can win awesome prizes, if you don't, nothing bad happens they can just help you get better. I also appreciate that the prize is fitting for the award; Broadway tickets and backstage tours are way better than a plaque or simply a grant. It gives the winners an opportunity to get more involved and immersed in the theatre.
